It is the means to an end. It is for some the key to comfort and for others the root of all evil. Whatever you think making money is, with respect to entrepreneurship I can tell you one thing, “Making Money is not fun.” I know I might sound crazy, but believe me when I say this, “Making Money is not fun.” It is rewarding to turn your passion into a profit. It is empowering when you are in charge. It is exciting when you can live how you want and do what you want, when you want. But believe me when I say, “It is not fun.”
I have to be repetitive right now because this article could possibly save you from wasting your time and your money. If you are one of those people who think of entrepreneurship in terms of “taking off when you want” or “making a ton of money for yourself”, you need to continue reading this. Real businesses require real work. You have to send out mailings, answer calls, improve your products, market constantly, handle refunds, work with crazy people, and do it all day every day. When entrepreneurs don’t work they don’t get paid. Most new entrepreneurs work over 16 hours a day, constantly networking, and wearing multiple hats with minimal help. For some profit comes slow, for many none at all. And for the successful few, with increased profits comes more work, more complaints, and less time to relax.
Again, making money is not fun, but let me tell you why we do it. Building a business you believe in is priceless. Every time you win a battle you feel as if you’ve won an Olympic Gold Medal. The long nights are badges of honor and the profit is like icing on the cake. Daily emails and monotonous tasks are never fun, but they are important because they make the well oiled machine that is your business, run smoothly. If your business is as vital to you as the air you breathe then you can do this. However, if you are doing this because you think it’s fun, then you have my permission to bail out now. Spending time with your family is fun. Attending business events can be crazy, but fun. Making money, that’s not fun, it’s hard work. Get used to it.
